Used condition on either is fine, and evenly aged patina is nice. Ideally the color should be white or off white. But black will be considered. If you have one or more of these for sale please email me at the address at the bottom of this page.
Although the IWC Mark X is NOT the rarest of WWWs, it is currently the most valued, money wise, of these watches among collectors.

This page is an attempt to gather information and news about IWC MarkXs.
Note that there seems to be a solid link between the M# and the 113#. The 113# minus the M# results in 1,118,980.
1) a Pakistan Broad Arrow
2) an "ATP" (plus sometimes an extra broadarrow)
3) KNIL.
When some IWC Mark Xs were returned by the army personel to the authourities, new markings were added and the watches were used for other purposes.
Pakistani Broad Arrow: Some IWC Mark Xs that were returned by the army personel were then used by the Pakistani Military. This is seen on IWC Mark Xs with an extra broad arrow on the case back that has a longer center line and a "P" next to it. I know of only one example - see M12283 in the table below.
ATP: - Army Time Piece - indicating this was army property. This engraving was sometimes added to the outside caseback. In addition, sometimes to signify the watch was no longer in use by the military, an extra broadarrow (opposing the original one in direction) was added.
KNIL: Some IWC Mark Xs that were returned by the army personel were then used by the Dutch Military. This is often seen on IWC Mark Xs with "KNIL" engraved on the back. For more information on KNIL click here. Another article on this topic is here.
The IWC Mark X consists of a Calibre 83 IWC movement. This movement was in production from 1935 to 1947. About 67,800 movements were made. Some of these movements had Incabloc shock protection, some did not. It is my understanding that only 11,400 of the manufactured Cal. 83 movements had Incabloc. Cal. 83 movements exist with either 15 or 16 jewels.
(Some background: Around the time this web page started I thought that some IWC Mark Xs had Incabloc (shock protection) and some did not. This author was informed, by some one more knowledgeable, that all IWC Mark Xs had Incabloc. So that information was mentioned here. Later on someone pointed out an early (serial numbered) Mark X that did not have Incabloc. So then this author mentioned that some of the earlier Mark Xs did not have Incabloc. Sometime later another knowledgeable reader started doing some more research on this. He has mentioned, as far as I understand, all Mark Xs movements do not have Incabloc. He is unable to find one with Incabloc. So that is the current state of the findings.)

The steel case is of reasonable quality for what I can gather. The original (unpolished) cases had a 'shined' finish to it, unlike some WWWs that had a brushed finish to them. On an IWC Mark X you tell that the outside caseback has been polished when you see thin concentric circles on it. On a non-polished outside caseback you will not see this.
A few comments on the fixed pin bars follows. These I believe were poorly designed/manufactured. I have seen numerous Mark Xs with problems here. The holes that hold the pin are often NOT placed in the same location on each lug. Therefore this can result in a crooked pin bar placement. Also, the holes of the bin bar holes are somewhat bigger than the size of the pin bar points. This results in a sliding of the pin bar within the hole. For this reason, I think, you will see some soldering done around the pin bar hole to remedy this for a number of Mark Xs.
The case measures 35 mm not including the crown.
In the mid 1940's IWC sent about 6000 Mark X watches to the British MoD. All of them had the same looking dial. This is what is generally considered the Original dial.
Note carefully:
The dials of many of these watches, after use, became worn, dirty and unuseable. Some that were returned to the MoD had their dials replaced or repainted (I am unable to tell which). These dials now looked different then their original style. One such style is refered to as the MoD NATO dial or just the NATO dial. Examples:M14027 M17182

Note: I have now seen some clear evidence that the factory is using another type of dial than the one mentioned below. I will write more about this at a later date.
Some owners send their watches to the IWC factory in Schaffhausen for a restoration. The dial is then replaced with a new one. The style of this dial is similar to the original one, but on close inspection difference(s) can be seen. In particular more of the '7' has been cut than in the Original dial.
There are other dials that are an imitation of the Original dial that do not fit into any of the above categories.
I try to put on this page the information I know of at the time of the writing. Sometimes I get more information later on which will lead me to know about negative aspects of a watch (or watches) that I was not aware of earlier. I try to keep things up to date, but I may be late from time to time. Please keep this in mind when you read this page. Do not take what I write here as cast in stone.

The '7' of the M# clearly seems to have overstruck a '6' on both the inside and outside of the caseback M# markings. It is worth noting that since the caseback contributes significantly to the value of the watch, this should be kept in mind. Nevertheless, it is to the best of my knowledge an authentic caseback, but I am NOT that confident. In addition the polished caseback has an extra number on the outside caseback that is hard to detect. Also note the movement is not in the best of shape. | ||
